Fans think Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ was actually response to Bruno Mars hit following lawsuit

The track is currently at the centre of a lawsuit, with Miley Cyrus accused of copying one of Bruno Mars’ songs

After Miley Cyrus was hit with a lawsuit yesterday claiming her Grammy-winning hit ‘Flowers’ copied a Bruno Mars song, fans have an interesting theory to explain the apparent similarities between the two songs.

The new lawsuit claims it’s clear Cyrus was ‘intentionally copying’ Mars’ song ‘When I Was Your Man’ when she wrote ‘Flowers’.

It’s important to note that it’s Tempo Music Investments who is suing Cyrus, not Mars himself.

The lawsuit, obtained by Rolling Stone, read: “Any fan of Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ knows that Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ did not achieve all of that success on its own.

“‘Flowers’ duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements of ‘When I Was Your Man,’ including the melodic pitch design and sequence of the verse, the connecting bass-line, certain bars of the chorus, certain theatrical music elements, lyric elements, and specific chord progressions.

“It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man’.”

With Cyrus’ fellow songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack being named as co-defendants, it continued: “With ‘Flowers,’ Cyrus, Hein, and Pollack have created a derivative work of ‘When I Was Your Man’ without authorisation.”

Following the controversy over the song, fans think that ‘Flowers’ could actually have been made in response to ‘When I was Your Man’ after noting some links within the lyrics.

One wrote on X: “I didn’t realise Miley Cyrus’s ‘Flowers’ song was a response to Bruno Mars… Clever.”

While another said: “The song’s chorus appears to be a response to Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’.

“While Bruno’s song says: ‘I should have bought you flowers and held your hand’ Miley’s says ‘I can buy myself flowers, hold my own hand and love myself better than you can’.”

The full ‘When I Was Your Man’ chorus lyrics read:

“I should have bought you flowers

And held your hand

Should have gave you all my hours

When I had the chance

Take you to every party ’cause all you wanted to do was dance

Now my baby’s dancing

But she’s dancing with another man”.

Meanwhile, the ‘Flowers’ chorus reads:

“I can buy myself flowers

Write my name in the sand

Talk to myself for hours

Say things you don’t understand

I can take myself dancing

And I can hold my own hand

Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”
